In late April 1806, the Lewis and Clark Expedition crossed the Columbia River and camped at the mouth of the Walla Walla River. The next day they set out on an old Indian trail known as the Old Celilo Falls Trail which took them across the flats and sand dunes of the Touchet Valley. This was spectacular country with rolling hills of loess, in some places one mile thick, and gentle sand dunes being ever blown by the Wallula Gap winds. Today this is rich wheat farm land and the home of the Walla Walla sweet onions. |
