On May 2nd, 1806, the Lewis and Clark Expedition traveled through Columbia County and passed through the town of Dayton, where they crossed the Touchet River. The May 2nd campsite is just NE of Dayton on Patit Creek. From here they went NE again towards the Tucannon River where on May 3rd, they stopped for lunch, just a mile or so west of Marengo. The Trail continues in a westerly direction and skirts the back side of Marengo heading towards the Clearwater River. The Trail through Columbia County is short, but spectacular.
To drive to these campsites follow US Highway 12 out of Dayton, then turn right onto Turner Road to Marengo.
