| May 17, Great Falls, MT to Missoula, MT -- Today we
saw what is left of the Great Falls. they are now dams, but are still
magnificent. We believe our flag is on the very spot Meriwether Lewis stood when he
first gazed full upon the "sublimely grand spectacle." on June 13, 1805. |

| Clark discovered the Giant Spring, which feeds the
country's shortest river.

| One of the most ill-named places on the Lewis & Clark
Trail is Lewis and Clark Pass -- Clark was never here. On July 3,
1806, near today's Lolo, MT, the party split up. Lewis took the Indians
"Road to the Buffalo", over L&C Pass to the Medicine (today's Sun) River,
and thus to the Great Falls. Clark went south to pick up their cached
canoes at Camp Fortunate, and eventually to the Yellowstone River. They
would not meet again until Aug. 12, 1806. We go over Rogers Pass. |

| We ate lunch at the airport, where I noticed the map of the Three
Forks in marble on the floor. the Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin rivers
come together to form the Missouri. This river flows down to the first
floor, where it flows all the way to the Yellowstone. I love designs like
this. Ann Goldhahn has taken very good care of us, and says goodbye at the
airport. George Dean continues to be our local instructor till we reach
Lincoln, MT |
