Later in the afternoon we went to Fort Atkinson, built
it 1821 to protectthe fur traders. it was only used for seven years. it is
built above the river on the bluff where Lewis and Clark had their first
council with the Indians, hence the name Council Bluff. The modern Iowa
town, Council Bluffs, takes its name from the same incident, but it is 10
miles south of the historic location. Just added in this last year is this
great bronze sculpture commemorating the occasion.
We wandered through the fort itself and were entertained and informed
by a reenactor protraying a cooper, and actually building barrels.
