 June 19, Canal

Today was a big day. I went to the western end of the Forth & Clyde and some other sites along the way. I think I will need two pages for this day, one for the canal and one for the Antonine Wall

There are many ways to make canal/road crossings: swing bridge (pictured here), lift bridges, single or double leaf bascule bridges, aqueducts, and I've seen them all.

Many years ago I worked with a fella who, when looking for an alternate solution, said: "Don't raise the bridge, lower the water." 40 years later I am seeing it actually happen. At dalmuir the bridge is barely 3 feet above the water, so they created a long lock more than twice the length of a standard boat plus the width of the roadway. And they "lower the water." Just like the man said.
